What happens during a lunar eclipse?

A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth and the moon align and the moon passes into Earth’s cone-shaped shadow. The umbra is the darkest part of the shadow, and the penumbra refers to the lighter, outer parts of the shadow.
