They learn that she was at a casino and adjacent gas station-convenience store in Northwood, Iowa, that day, but they are unable to catch her. Surveillance video released nearly a month later shows her approaching the store cashier, buying a sandwich, and asking for directions to head south out of Iowa.

April 5: Surveillance video shows Riess smiling and talking with Pamela Hutchinson at a brewery in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Authorities believe that Riess targeted Hutchinson because of similarities in their appearance so she could later steal her identity. The authorities think Riess killed Hutchinson on or around this day, then stole her car and stopped at a bank to withdraw $5,000 in cash using Hutchinson’s name.

April 6: Riess is seen arriving at a Hilton Hotel in Ocala, Florida, using Hutchinson’s credit cards to pay for a hotel room.

April 7-8: Riess is spotted at casinos in Louisiana, including the Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder, where she won a jackpot.

April 19: A tipster reports a sighting of Riess at a restaurant in South Padre Island, Texas, a resort community 27 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. Two undercover officers approach Riess, who was socializing in a bar, and ask her to confirm her identity. She is then arrested without incident by federal deputies waiting outside.
